Dr. Bob Canterbury incorporated AIMS in 1968. At the time, Dr. Canterbury taught business computer programming at Northeast Louisiana University. It was the University’s policy to encourage its faculty to operate consulting businesses as sidelines. By the early ‘seventies, "jobbers" had begun to predominate AIMS’ consulting clientele.

In 1975, a nephew of Dr. Canterbury, a man who owned a Shell Oil jobbership, told Dr. Canterbury that he was ready to get a computer system for his business. Would Uncle Bob help him find one? But, in 1975 there was no such thing as a software package for petroleum marketers. So the nephew prevailed on Dr. Canterbury to write one. In 1976, AIMS became the first company to produce and install computer software designed specifically for petroleum marketers. It was called COMPAS, short for Complete Oil Marketers Perpetual Accounting System. A Shell jobber in a nearby town heard about his friend’s system and so he got one, too. Then another Shell jobber heard about COMPAS and he ordered a system. And so on. That’s how AIMS got into the petroleum marketer software business.

Accessibility. You can get our president (or any other AIMS staff member) on the phone. This is a characteristic of a family-owned business. AIMS is a family-owned business that deals mostly with other family-owned businesses. We are proud of being the oldest company in our particular field, and also one that has been owned and operated by the same family since incorporation in 1968.

We also understand and communicate the fact that implementing and using a complex product such as AIMS’ is a responsibility that is shared between AIMS and the client.
