What's the scariest thing that ever happened
to you? If you ever had a system crash and you didn't have
good backups, that would probably be among the scariest things ever.
It is your responsibility to execute backups of your AIMS systems
and to confirm that the backup processes were successful.
Let's review a list of "Backup Musts":
- Make sure you have at least 10 tapes
for backup--one for each business day of the week for 2 weeks.
- Label your tapes and make sure you
rotate them properly.
- Run a cleaning tape in your backup
device at least once a month. Make sure this cleaning tape
is also in good condition!
- If your AIMS software runs on UNIX, know where your AIRBAG or RESCUE RANGER
media is.
- Whether your AIMS software runs on
Windows Server or UNIX, you will get a confirmation from your
system if the backup was successful. Look for this
confirmation daily.
- If your backup fails, run a
manual backup next morning.
- If your backup fails, try another
tape; it that one works, you probably have a bad tape.
Replace.
- Do a backup each business day.
- Keep your backup media off site as much
as is feasible.
Basics of
Backup Tape Care and Replacement
- Tapes must be kept clean.
- Dust, dirt and oils are the biggest
enemies of tape life. Keep tapes in their protective cases
when not in use. Store them in a clean place. Do not
touch the surface of the tape.
- Follow tape cleaning instructions.
Most newer tape drives monitor the condition of the tapes, and
you will be alerted when the drive needs cleaning.
- AIMS strongly recommends that you
replace all your backup tapes once a year.
