Business Continuity and Recovery Strategies

There is more to disaster recovery than having a good set of backup tapes.  Depending on the severity of the disaster, you might not even have any backup tapes!

There is a whole segment of the computer business that focuses on providing business continuity and disaster recovery services to businesses.  They offer a full range of options.

Commercial hot sites: Purpose-built facilities that provide a stricken business' personnel with the hardware and software to resume transaction processing until that business' own facilities are repaired.

Mobile Data Centers: These are pre-configured mobile data centers that can come to a client's locale.

Internal hot sites:  This is the most expensive type of disaster recovery data center.  This is a wholly-redundant data center owned and operated by an individual business and is intended only for the use of that business.

Cold sites:  These are commercial properties that do not have computer hardware and software ready and waiting for emergency use.  This option relies on the ability to quickly ship in all necessary equipment and software when needed.

AIMS does not provide any of these options; however, we have identified providers and we have the expertise to help you choose the best disaster recovery plan, based on your business needs and budget.  Prior to joining AIMS, David Dorries, our Director of Sales and Marketing, worked in the disaster recovery market.  David is available to guide you to an appropriate disaster recovery vendor.  You may contact David at ddorries@aims1.com or at 318-323-2467, ext. 9310.

Basics of Backup Tape Care and Replacement
  • Tapes must be kept clean.
  • Dust, dirt and oils are the biggest enemies of tape life.  Keep tapes in their protective cases when not in use.  Store them in a clean place.  Do not touch the surface of the tape.
  • Follow tape cleaning instructions.  Most newer tape drives monitor the condition of the tapes, and you will be alerted when the drive needs cleaning.
  • AIMS strongly recommends that you replace all your backup tapes once a year.
