The History: Thompson Oil Company started out as an Amoco jobber in the mid 1970’s and was incorporated in 1976. Two longtime employees, John Kutsoginis and Bob Herzog, bought Thompson Oil Company in 2002 from the company’s founder, Ernie Thompson. Currently Thompson Oil is an unbranded jobber and distributes Citgo lubricants. They operate in Michigan, primarily in the metropolitan Detroit area. Thompson Oil delivers to any industry that has a need for diesel fuel, gasoline and lubricants. They serve home heat customers, as well as golf courses, construction contractors and farmers. Over the last thirty years, Thompson Oil Company has purchased eight local oil companies, operated an oil change business and RV business, and built two Pacific Pride locations.

The Situation: Melissa Wills, Thompson Oil’s Office Manager, discusses what their software situation was like. "Before making our switch to COMPAS, we were pretty much complacent about the software options available in our industry. Our old software provider was acquired by another company and we were being forced into a program we didn’t want and phone support that was inadequate and unfriendly. So we decided to see what AIMS had to offer." They were immediately impressed with the features and capabilities that are available within the COMPAS accounting system.

The Decision: Thompson Oil could see that the functionality and automation features in COMPAS would make their office much more efficient. "The streamlined accounts payable and manifest programs, the payroll

 

module, inventory program, degree day module and DTN interface were the determining factors involved in our choice for making the switch to AIMS," Melissa recalls.

Support of their system also played a part. They recognized that inadequate support was ultimately costing their company money. "We were fed up with the support we received from our old provider. It was such a breath of fresh air after switching to AIMS. Everyone at AIMS is always so friendly and helpful—no matter what kind of situation comes up."

The Benefits: Thompson Oil knows the ability to keep track of margins and expenses is a must in this industry. "Our COMPAS system has really helped our company track our margins and expenses with the customer profit reports and general ledger."

AIMS has also done specialized programming for Thompson Oil. "They set up a customized budget program for our home heating customers. They developed a report that shows how many gallons each Thompson Oil driver delivers to help us determine if a driver is delivering too much or not enough," said Melissa.
